Follow up to my random conversation

Me: So, how was your seminar yesterday?
Student: Oh, it was really good. You missed a lot.
Me: Damn. Maybe the next one.
Student: Yeah, I heard rumours that the next one's going to be in Hawaii.
Me: Nice. *thinking* I've got to stop doing this.

A Random Conversation:

I found myself in a very random conversation today.

Me: See you tomorrow, guys.
Student: We will?
Me: Uh, yeah
Student: So, you're going to the "Take Over the World" Seminar tomorrow too?
Me: Uh, actually, I think I'm going to miss this one. I gave it a lot of thought and realised taking over the world is really low on my list of priorities, so I thought I'd do something more productive with my time.
Student: That makes sense. I admire that, Miss.
Me: Thanks. Plus, I'm waiting for when they hold it somewhere really cool, like New York or something.
Student: Yeah, Belgium isn't that great.
Me: *thinking* how the hell did I get into this conversation?!

Random Wicked Question #42

When Galinda "Galindafied" Elphaba in Popular, and took off her glasses, did she get her contacts off-stage, or did she just let Elphaba ruin her eyesight?

And just how bad are Elphaba's eyes really? Because we never see the glasses again, and if she were wearing contacts, I know you have to change them so often and such, and I don't know if Elphaba would be able to get contact lenses on the run...

I've always just imagined them as like reading glasses that she wears a lot. Like, I don't think she's blind without them. Because otherwise, that's kinda mean of Galinda, especially if she didn't get contacts.

Thoughts?

Astrological Charts

Now, I don't really read my horoscope. I went through a stage where I did read it, like for the week or month, etc. but it never came true.

But I'm still fascinated by the idea that the planets at our time of birth effect our personality. 

Today I was watching an episode of Mad About You and they were getting their astrological charts read. So, just for fun (I'm sick and bored here, people) I decided to google it and get a free astrological profile and see how close it is.

Now, here's the thing: Sometimes, I'm really good at reading something and thinking "I totally do that". And sometimes, I'm not sure. I read something and I'm not sure if it's right. 

Maybe it's a case of being too close to the forest to see the trees (that's the saying, isn't it?). So, I thought I would post it on here! 

I'm pretty sure most of the people who read this are people who know me, some better than others. So, feel free to read this and let me know what you think!

Rising Sign is in 29 Degrees Cancer

Historical lesson!

Time is a funny thing in Oz. It's hard to discern just what kind of era it's set in, in terms of fashion and technology.

Now, most people probably don't really care about that, but as a writer, I want to get these things write- even just for fanfiction. It honestly bugs me a little when people have Elphaba and Galinda wearing jeans and using laptops and mobile phones (cell phones for you Americans), because it just doesn't sit well with me.

Don't get me wrong, if I like the story I'll read it nonetheless and if it's a modern adaptation of Wicked that's different.

We don't have many clues as to the time period. I always picture it sometime around the 1900-1940s era. I have a feeling this is mostly because the book of The Wizard of Oz was written in 1900 and the movie came out in 1939, but also because some of the costumes (Elphaba's act 2 dress, Fiyero's Shiz uniform in the Lion Cub scene) just remind me of that kind of era (probably closer to 1900 than 1940).

And then there's the fact that time in Oz seems to be different than our world. Of course, my only foundation for this is that in Out of Oz when Dorothy comes back to Oz she's about 18 (I haven't actually read the book yet, but I've read a summary) whilst the book focuses on Elphaba's granddaughter.

Given that the majority of my stories are set at Shiz, technology isn't a huge problem for me. But occassionally I have to write something, and I have to think "would they have these in Oz?"

Like, for example, a refrigerator.

Well, I'm going to say yes.

Did you know, the first refrigerator for home and domestic use was invented in 1913? And they began to be mass produced in 1918?

Of course, "These home units usually required the installation of the mechanical parts, motor and compressor, in the basement or an adjacent room while the cold box was located in the kitchen." This changed in 1922-23 when they became more self-contained and compact although they were about $700, which was more than a car at the time!

So, one of the stories on my list (it's one of 14, sorry guys!) has all the plot worked out, but no title.

And that bugs me.

Wicked anniversary

Today is my Wicked anniversary!

It was two years today that I went and saw Wicked at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney with my friend Christine.

And I never imagined then that I'd see the show again, let alone another 6 times; or that I'd love it so much, get to meet the cast and meet so many amazing friends through the show!

But I'm so happy I did!
